E-Therapy

A better future through online support:
Online or E-Therapy offers access to a unique, clinically robust, online treatment programme to help individuals make positive changes in regard to their alcohol consumption. E-Therapy has evolved by utilising researched based methodologies in conjunction with the highly accessible medium of the Internet. The organisation behind E-Therapy has been in the addiction field for over 100 years and is possibly the largest addiction and alcohol treatment company in Europe.

How will E-Therapy help me?
E-Therapy uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), two highly researched and successful methods to address excessive drinking. The system we use is unique in the UK and should not be confused with online counselling. It is a fully structured, robust programme, clinically supported by a multidisciplinary team. The process is safe, confidential, and highly effective (evidence-based results accumulated since March 2005).

When you visit the E-Therapy site you will be initially assessed by a multidisciplinary team for suitability to the programme – if it is not deemed that you will reap significant long-term benefits from the programme then alternative treatment will be recommended.

Once you have been assessed you can begin to receive bespoke E-therapy, delivered by a personal therapist. Twice a week, usually over a period of 16 weeks, you and your therapist will exchange messages and assignments via your personal client file.

The site also provides extensive information regarding the physical, psychological and social effects of alcohol, and an online forum for you to anonymously exchange experiences and gain support from other E-therapy clients.

Is E-therapy for me?
Deciding on whether E-therapy is the right treatment for you is dependent on your lifestyle and circumstances. E-therapy is not suitable for everyone, but can provide accessible, anonymous and successful support for those in a variety in of situations, including the following:

  • People who cannot afford time away from their job or business.
  • People with young children.
  • People who want to prevent their drinking from getting out of hand.
  • People who are concerned about becoming dependent.
  • Non-dependent alcohol users who wish to cut down on their damaging levels of alcohol use.
  • People who require complete anonymity.
  • People who have relapsed recently or who have been into residential rehab but need more ongoing support.

E-therapy is not suitable for those in the following situations:

  • Drug users or those who primary addiction is drugs.
  • Alcoholics with a high daily consumption of alcohol or long-term heavy use.
  • People who experience severe withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking, e.g. shakes or tremors, and fits or seizures.

Does E-therapy actually work?
E-therapy has a proven success rate. E-therapy is unique in the UK, but is backed by excellent results achieved in Europe. You shouldn't confuse this robust, structured, 16 week programme with simple online counselling. This treatment is designed by experienced psychiatrists, psychologists and a medical team. You can be sure that the programme is safe, effective, evidence based and outcome driven. Your personal therapist will provide guidance and support to help you regain control of your life.

Remember that the World Health Organisation recommends a safe drinking level of 14 units per week for females and 21 units per week for males. Those people who have completed this programme have exhibited greatly reduced consumption levels, had far fewer health-related problems and gave the programme very high ratings for effectiveness and safety.
