Drug Detox

About Drug Detox
Detoxification, or detox as it is more widely known, is the first step towards recovery. As part of a continuing therapy, the drugs detox process works effectively to remove the substance painlessly from the system ideally in a medically monitored environment. Stopping using can be a frightening prospect, however, ensuring you are being looked after and made to feel as safe and as comfortable as possible can alleviate much of the anxiety. Without doubt, depending upon your drug of choice, the safest way to detox is in a suitable clinic where you will be supported by medical staff around the clock. It is especially important to enter into a safe and professionally staffed environment if you are using a cocktail of drugs as this can make the drug detox more complicated and increase the risks of negative or painful withdrawal symptoms.

Once clients arrive at an appropriate detox clinic the doctor and clinicians will formulate an individual drug detox programme to make sure each client is as comfortable as possible throughout their detox. It can be very comforting knowing that the people around you understand what you are going through, have probably been through a drug detox themselves and have helped many people in similar situations.

Certain drug detoxes can be much harder than others and we do encourage patients to seek our advice prior to treatment and we rarely recommend a home detox unless you have detoxed previously without complications or pain. Once the individual has undergone a drug detox, they are ready to take the next vital step towards long-term rehabilitation.

Each drug has an individual physical and psychological impact on each person. Some drugs, due to their chemical structure, have no specific medical detox process associated with them, however managing withdrawal is still an important element of seeking treatment. The clinical team can help you to address the cravings and other aspects of stopping using to help you get into recovery.

Whilst a drug detox will remove the substance from your system, the detox alone is most unlikely to result in long-term recovery. This is because important psychological work must be completed to help the individual understand their drug addiction issues and develop strategies to avoid future relapse. In-patient rehab is the crucial element in the overall drug treatment process.
